Why so few companies will publish a price
Search "gutter cleaning cost" and you'll get a lot of pages that never answer the question. The reason is usually not dishonesty — it's that gutter runs vary enormously between homes and a wrong number is a hard conversation later. But it leaves you unable to compare anyone without booking three estimates.
We publish starting prices on our pricing page for the same reason we quote from a photo: if the number is fair, showing it costs us nothing and saves you an afternoon.
The four things that change the price
- Height. The single biggest factor. A single-storey ranch is ladder work from the ground; a two-storey with a steep pitch is slower, needs more setup, and is priced accordingly.
- Linear feet of gutter. A compact rectangle costs less than the same square footage spread across dormers, bays, and a wrapped porch. Roof complexity matters more than house size.
- How long it's been. A trough with a season of leaves in it is a different job from one with three years of compacted sludge and things growing in it. If it's been a while, say so — it's better in the quote than as a surprise.
- Gutter guards. Panels have to be lifted and reseated, which adds real time. Guards are not a reason to skip the quote, just a reason to mention them.
What should not change the price after the fact: an ordinary clog. Clearing a blocked downspout is part of the job, not an upcharge.
Cheap gutter cleaning, and how it gets cheap
A very low price usually means one of three shortcuts. The debris gets blown out rather than removed — fast, and it deposits a layer of wet leaf mulch across your roof, lawn, and beds. Or the troughs get cleared and the downspouts never get flushed, which leaves the actual blockage in place. Or the debris is left in bags on site for you to deal with.
Ask any quote you're comparing three questions: is the debris hauled away, is every downspout run with water and checked at the bottom, and do I get photos. Those three answers explain most of the price spread in this market.
The cheapest gutter cleaning is the one before the freeze
Cost framing misses the real number here. Clogged gutters in a Michigan winter are the leading local cause of ice dams — meltwater backs up over frozen debris, forces itself under the shingles, and ends up in the attic and down the interior walls. Roof repair, insulation, and drywall is a four-figure event that a two-figure cleaning prevents.
